Clanton Police and Fire Departments will participate in a “Night Out Against Crime” program Aug. 4. Clanton’s City Council approved a motion at its meeting Wednesday night to allow the departments to sponsor the “Night Out” here.

Police Chief Brian Stilwell explained that both the police and fire departments will have equipment on display and will provide printed materials that explain police and fire programs for those citizens who attend. He said the event has been held several years in the City of Jemison and has been popular.

He said “Night Out Against Crime” is a nationally organized event that brings attention to law enforcement and its battles against crime. He added he hopes the event can be held somewhere like Goose Pond Park and that it would be held from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.

In other business, the council approved an agreement with Jefferson State Community College to manage the civic center now under construction. It passed a resolution that approved the city’s participation in a National League of Cities’ discount drug card program for employees.

Shelby Ellison and Larry Colburn were approved as full-time police officers, and the council approved a motion for Chief Stilwell to attend an Alabama Association of Chiefs of Police in August. It declared William White’s seat on the city’s utility board vacant by resolution and agreed to appoint a person to fill the position at a later date.

It upheld the city’s personnel board’s findings concerning the termination of Dannie Bulger. The board upheld the termination of the former employee when the employee asked the board to review his termination.

The council approved the sale of a beer and wine license to SNR Enterprises LLC. The beer and wine will be sold at the Chevron Station on Lay Dam Road near City Park.

It approved a $27,000 allocation to the Senior Citizen Transit Authority. Mayor Billy Joe Driver said the authority returns approximately $15,000 to the city in the form of rent each year.
