The Birmingham Bass Masters Club’s fishing tournament to benefit Camp Smile-A-Mile has become quite a tradition.

The club is celebrating its 40th year of existence and its 20th year of helping Camp SAM with the tournament at Lake Mitchell—and will rely once again on a familiar group of anglers to make the tournament a success.

“The majority of the participants have participated every year,” club president Scott Jones said.

The tournament will be held from 6:30 p.m. Saturday until 6:30 a.m. Sunday, with registration, launch and weigh-in at Higgins Ferry Park. Registration will begin at 4:30 p.m.

Registration costs $100 per boat, and there is a guaranteed payback of at least $4,200, with the winner taking home $1,000. The top 10 finishers will receive cash prizes, and many door prizes will be given away.

“Even if you don’t place, there’s a good chance you or your partner will get you money back in door prizes,” Jones said.

Birmingham Bass Masters is one of the oldest fishing clubs in the country and over the years has donated about $140,000 to Camp SAM, which is a non-profit state organization for children who have or have had cancer.
