As the largest high school in the county, Chilton County is where it belongs in the 2008-09 academic year All-Sports Award rankings: at the top.

After coming in a disappointing third in the inaugural rankings last year, it all came together for CCHS this time around.

The baseball team made the playoffs for the first time since 2003. The softball team won the county tournament. The basketball and football teams continued their success with playoff appearances. The golf team had its best season of coach David Moore’s tenure. The tennis team suffered only one regular season loss and made the state tournament, and the track and field team had representatives at the state meet.

In a rankings system set up to reward teams for fielding many teams, it was more than enough. CCHS earned 20.667 points, 6.5 points ahead of second-place Isabella.

Jemison and Thorsby tied for third place. Maplesville, last year’s champion, fell to fifth place, and Verbena was sixth.

Schools were awarded points for each sport they participated in, depending on various levels of accomplishment. CCHS was given .167 points for simply fielding a soccer team, for example, while the basketball team earned 3.333 points because it won the county tournament and made the playoffs.

Sports were weighted based on their perceived importance. A football state championship would earn 10.5 points, for example, while a girls basketball state championship would bring 3.5 points.
