The Roy Wood Peach Festival Art Show celebrated its silver anniversary Thursday by handing out blue, red and white ribbons.

Winning artists were recognized during a program at Peoples Southern Bank, which sponsors the show.

The annual event was renamed this year to honor the late Roy Wood, a longtime bank employee who co-founded the show.

“Roy was such a special person; he loved this show and was really involved in it and that makes it special for us,” said Richard Moore, bank president and CEO.

First place, second place, third place and honorable mention awards were given in two categories: a junior division for those under 18 and a senior division for all other artists.

Ashley Combs, 13, won the junior division. She is the daughter of Douglas and Amanda Combs.

The Isabella High School student has been painting for three years and drew her inspiration for her fruit basket piece from the Peach Festival.

“Well, it’s fruit and the Peach Festival so I thought it would be good to enter,” Combs said.

An art professor at the University of Auburn-Montgomery judged this year’s contest.

In his comments, the judge said Combs’ artwork “is painted with a good amount of understanding of how to observe objects and then use a rush to define and articulate them.”

Del Geesling won the senior division for her picture of a vegetable and fruit market. She decided to enter the contest to honor Wood, her friend and fellow artist.

“I had not planned to enter the contest,” Geesling said. “But we were so close to Roy, we decided to enter it this time.”

Geesling cut it close though. She finished her painting just days before the June 24 deadline to enter.

“I had to put it in the car to dry,” she said.

The judge said Geesling’s painting “has a very nice balance between understanding of form and color along with a very confident way of applying this paint … conceived well by an experienced artist.”

Other winners in the junior division were: Sarah Sanford, second place; Hannah Sanford, third place; Madison Easterling, honorable mention.

Other winners in the senior division were: Carolyn Cumbie, second place; Beverly Baker, third place; and Elizabeth Byrd, honorable mention.

All 50 entries will be on display in Peoples Southern Bank’s lobby now through Tuesday, June 30.
