Law enforcements officials subdued a 45-year-old Verbena man Thursday after a standoff that lasted more than an hour.

The man reportedly was making threats to neighbors while naked in his underwear until Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the residence in the 200 block of County Road 508 in Verbena at about 10:45 a.m.

The white male then threatened the officers. Neighbors advised deputies that the man had discharged a firearm at the residence and threatened suicide on previous nights, so a perimeter was established around the residence while the Tactical Unit and crisis negotiators were dispatched.

The man threw numerous items, including three firearms, onto the front yard and asked officers to shoot him, saying, “It’s a good day to die.”

The man eventually fled from the back of the residence and was taken into custody without injury.

A Probate Court Order was obtained to transport the man to the VA Hospital in Tuscaloosa for treatment.

“This would appear to be an attempt to commit ‘suicide by cop,’ given the statements [the suspect] made as well as walking out in front of armed deputies carrying firearms.” Said Shane Mayfield, an investigator with the Sheriff’s Department. “However, everyone relied on their training and used the proper discretion to bring a dangerous situation to a peaceful resolution.”
