Clanton’s City Council voted Tuesday night to purchase a ladder fire truck from Profire of Pelham for $799,500.

Bids were opened at its May 11 meeting, but the council took no action on the bids until it could determine the bids met the city’s specifications. The truck is a demonstration model with less than 10,000 miles on its odometer. It will be housed at the city’s downtown fire station.

In other business, the city voted to spend $39,519.50 for computers for its police department. It amended a city ordinance that charged $200 additional dollars in fees to those convicted of DUI and other charges relating to prescription drugs.

The council passed a resolution that requests $500,000 in federal stimulus funds to replace the 8th Street Bridge. The council also passed an emergency spending motion to allow the mayor to spend $43,350 to make repairs to two bush aerators at the city’s wastewater treatment plant.

It approved a $3,000 allocation to Child Protect and passed a motion moving up to $100,000 in city funds into the city’s utility department to use for repairs.

Jamie Sowell was hired as a truck driver for the street department. Dillon Watts, Brandon Baker and Brandon Easterling were hired part time to work at City Park. Kaland Farrow, Kendrick Woods, Jalen Osborne, James Gambrell, Ghermye Reed, Margie Mayweather and Daz Grayson were hired to work at E.M. Henry Park this summer.

The council approved a motion to allow Alvin Winters to attend an 80-hour APOST refresher class.

The council meeting was postponed until Tuesday night due to Memorial Day.
