Memorial Day weekend traditionally draws Americans outdoors — to backyards, pools, lakes and rivers — a weekend of barbecues, friends and family and sunshine.

Another element could be added to Monday’s festivities — rain.

An upper-level low-pressure area is in the eastern Gulf of Mexico and is expected to drift eastward and northward. This system could linger in the central Alabama area over the holiday weekend.

“It looks to be sort of wet and cloudy at this point,” Gary Goggins, National Weather Service meteorologist, said.

Goggins said the storm is not a tropical system, but it will move slowly through the area. He said to expect isolated storms and cloudy skies.

“We’re not at this point saying it’s going to be a washout,” Goggins said.

He said heavy rainfall is not expected, but meteorologists will monitor rainfall levels as the storm moves inland.

“If we do have heavy rainfall it will affect rivers, streams and lakes as well,” Goggins said.

Those who plan to head to the lake for the holiday should keep an eye on the weather.

“If you’re on the lake during the weekend, make sure you’re not on the lake during a thunderstorm,” Goggins said.

He said gusty winds like those in the area Thursday are not expected.
