A lot of history resides at 407 Eighth St. N. in Clanton.

So do Charlie and Ava Schoenvogel, the fourth owners of the Colonial Revival style home built in 1923 by former Clanton mayor C. Fenn Jones.

The Schoenvogels are among three winners of the Clanton Beautification Award, which is given each year to the owners of a residence, business and a historic home.

“We like to live in town, and we’re trying to keep the house like it was,” Charlie Schoenvogel said.

The home is known as a “four square” structure because it has two levels with four rooms on each floor.

The Schoenvogels have the original plans for the home, as well as the original chandeliers. They are also in the process of restoring the carriage house and potting shed, which sit on the back of the property.

The property is decorated with old-fashioned plants including Confederate jasmine, camellias and dogwoods.

Clanton First United Methodist Church, also located on Eighth Street, was named in place of the business category.

Helen Parrish, retired program director for the church, was born the same year the church was built, 1923. According to a church history compiled by Parrish herself, the church is the third building to be erected on the plot of ground.

“The two large murals depicting Christ and the woman at the well, and Christ with Mary Magdalene at the empty tomb were the work of an Italian artist, C.V. Malmede,” the church history states.

“Our church has sent so many young men into the ministry,” said Parrish, careful not to deviate from the church’s purpose.

The majestic church is set off by plants of various colors.

The winners of this year’s residential beautification award are Thomas and Beverly Hobbs of 106 Shenandoah Drive. The Hobbs have lived there since 1986.

“We’ve worked on it all this time,” Thomas Hobbs said.

The backyard, once a pine thicket, is now green with St. Augustine grass and outlined by gardens exploding with color — knockout roses, hydrangeas and daylilies to name a few. Amongst the gardens are various birdhouses, a bench and an inviting patio.
