THORSBY — The Chilton County Board of Education lifted the enrollment freeze at Thorsby School on Tuesday at the request of the school.

Thorsby Principal Russ Bryan, who was in attendance at the meeting, said the average daily membership at the K-12 school had decreased by 34 students from last year to this year. As a result, the school is expecting to lose two teacher units.

“It’s kind of hard to stay in an enrollment freeze and have two empty classrooms,” Bryan said.

Bryan explained that average daily membership — not to be confused with enrollment — is taken during the first 40 days of the school year. He said Thorsby’s average daily membership falls between 835 and 840 students.

The number of teacher units at any given school is based on the latest average daily membership total.

“That’s something the community needs to understand,” Bryan said, adding, “We have a good attendance.”

The enrollment freeze was first implemented about five years ago due to overcrowding problems at Thorsby. Nine additional classrooms were added about three years ago to relieve this problem.

There are currently 854 students enrolled at Thorsby School, Bryan said.

In other business, the board:

Approved a motion to allow Jemison Middle School Principal Mark Knight to adopt a policy for school uniforms upon recommendation of the superintendent.

Granted Chilton County High School permission to divide the supplement for an assistant softball coach equally between two assistant coaches, Misty Jones and Brooke Sullivan.

Granted the Transportation Department permission to terminate the CITY Program bus route and reassign the driver, Carol Wilson, to a regular route.

Approved the annual renewal of the public employees blanket bond with Old Republic Surety Group in the amount of $502.
