Emergency officials responded early Friday morning to a violent accident at the intersection of U.S. Highway 31 and County Road 29.

According to Alabama State Troopers, a dump truck heading north on Hwy. 31 collided with a late model Ford Taurus that was pulling out, crossing 31. The dump truck struck the Taurus on the driver’s side, flinging the car off the opposite side of the highway.

Chilton County Sheriff Kevin Davis, who was in the area, said the male driver of the vehicle, who he said was from Thorsby, was removed from the car by medical personnel and then transported to UAB Medical Center by LifeSaver helicopter.

The condition of the driver remains unknown.

Troopers are continuing to investigate the accident but said the Taurus appeared to be crossing the highway in an attempt to continue down County Road 29.

Responding to the accident, in addition to the sheriff’s department and Troopers, were Collins Chapel Volunteer Fire Department No. 1 and No. 2 and Regional Paramedic Service.

Davis said Jemison Fire and Rescue prepared the landing site for LifeSaver at the Jemison Park-n-Ride. RPS transported the victim to the site where he was then airlifted to Birmingham.
