Maplesville softball headed to state

By defeating inter-county rival Billingsley twice on Saturday, the Maplesville softball team has earned a trip to the Class 1A state tournament next weekend.

The Red Devils beat Wadley, 20-8, on Friday and entered Saturday’s play in the winner’s bracket. The Devils’ brought their hot bats back the next morning and topped Billingsley, 15-4.

Maplesville then lost to eventual South Central Region champion and No. 8-ranked Holy Spirit, 6-4, and the Bears defeated Fayetteville, 12-0, and Sweet Water, 13-7, to set a Billingsley-Maplesville rematch.

The Devils won easily again, 12-0, before dropping another game to Holy Spirit, 14-1.

In the Class 2A regional tournament, also at Lagoon Park, Isabella was knocked out of the playoffs with losses to Hale County, 10-0, and Goshen, 5-0.
