On May 3, when most of Chilton County was experiencing a torrential downpour, many of its residents were in Wiggins, Miss., for the Southern Enduro Riders Association harescramble hosted by Masterlinks Enduro Team.

The Kids races were held at 8:30 a.m. under overcast skies, and five local young men competed. Neal Ousley coasted to a win in the Vet Kids class with Landon Barrett finishing fifth.

Jackson Davis (Int. Kids) and brother Grayson (Beginner Pee Wee) both finished third in their classes. Connor Barrett also claimed third in the Pee Wee Class.

The Vets and Int. Kids rode one lap on the adult 12-mile course. The Pee Wees and the Beginner Pee Wees raced for 20 minutes on a 1.5-mile course.

The adult race got started at 12:30 p.m. under the same overcast skies, but the threat of rain was more imminent now.

The AA class was first to leave, with reigning champion Cliff Ousley claiming the holeshot in the sandy terrain just off of the start. Ousley never relinquished the lead and won the three-lap race by 1 minute over Steve Nicholas of south Alabama.

About the end of the second lap, the rain started to fall and did not let up for the remainder of the race. The dusty trails turned to slippery ones in a matter of minutes.

Dustin Stevens and Frank Davis finished sixth and eighth overall, respectively. The change in course and weather didn’t hurt Tyler Carter’s performance as he blasted the Open A class competitors to ace the class and finish fifth overall.

Bryan Petty claimed fifth in Open A. Chris McMillan claimed the holeshot and never checked up as he won the Lites A class with Kevin DeLoach and Hunter Sanders finishing third and fourth, respectively.

The Vet A class also had three local guys going for the gold with Adrian Gervais, Glenn Hollingshead and David Summers claiming the top spots. Jonathon Seales rode hard to claim the final podium position in the Lites B class.

John Huggins and Ted Anz battled again, with Huggins coming out on top in this one to claim second in Vet B while Anz brought home fourth. Jason Brasington would finish in eighth place in Vet B.

It seems that nobody will be able to top Phillip McMillan in Golden Masters, as he once again claimed the top prize. Chris Aultman in Open C would finish the day in ninth.

Avery McCarley, in his first year of competition, claimed ninth in the Beginner Class. Jared White had his best finish of the year at this event, claiming second place while Jacob Davis followed closely behind in third. Beau Burnett would be the only local competitor not to finish the event.

The next SERA event will be a harescramble on May 17 in Michigan City, Miss., close to the Tennessee border.
