It is time to pull the bill

We are now asking for the unusual, the uncommon and maybe, the unlikely of our Alabama legislators.

With the local bill, allowing the Chilton County Commission to establish a county business license, in the Alabama House, we are asking our legislators to notice that this is an incomplete and bad bill and prevent its passage.

This bill, while it has the best of intentions, is riddled with problems, the least of which is that it remains vague on who will be required to purchase a license and what rate structure it will follow.

There is even some doubt if the commissioners themselves understand the legislation or even if there is a consensus — public or not — of what the final details of the bill will be.

As we have said from the beginning, we do not have a problem with the commission wanting to establish a license. We simply have a problem that enough homework on the subject was not done in advance.

Our commissioners have even said in articles this week that public meetings will be held after the bill is passed. That is something that should have been done long before the bill was written.

We should not be in the business of giving any governmental body a blank check without first asking questions.

This is a bad bill and should not be passed by the Legislature.
