Tired Tigers are county champs

The Chilton County softball team had just finished its fourth game in one day but still had enough energy to dump a bucket of cold water on coach Krisi Parrish.

The Tigers were excited because they had just won their second county softball tournament championship in three years.

This one was doubtful after Maplesville defeated CCHS on Monday, the first day of the tournament, but the Tigers topped those same Red Devils twice on Tuesday, 6-5 then 6-0 in the championship game.

“They did such a good job,” Parrish said. “They wanted it real bad.”

Bad enough to shake off four games worth of fatigue.

Pitching was the deciding factor. Three CCHS hurlers combined for the day’s wins.

Lindsey Parrish was the winning pitcher in the first game of the day, an 8-0 decision over tournament host and defending champion Thorsby. Then Brianna Cleckler shut down Isabella in a 13-2 win.

Kadie Coker earned CCHS’s first win over Maplesville, in which the Devils scored two runs in the top of the seventh and got the tying run on first base but came no closer.

Cleckler pitched the championship game and allowed only two hits.

Chilton scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning and never looked back.
