Isabella and Maplesville emerged as the only two unbeaten teams after Day 1 of the Chilton County Softball Tournament, but they accomplished the feat in drastically different fashions.

Maplesville gutted out wins over both Thorsby and Chilton County, 6-2 and 7-3, while Isabella breezed by Verbena, 16-1 in five innings, in its only game of the day.

“That was my team that finally showed up,” Maplesville coach Ashlie Harrison said after the second win. “That was the most complete game we’ve played.”

That might have been because the Red Devils had a chance to work out any kinks. Instead of wearing out her team, Harrison said having to play in the day’s first game at Thorsby’s Sam Bentley Park might have actually helped.

Maplesville fell behind tournament host and defending champion Thorsby 2-0 in the early game but won after plating one run in the top of the fifth inning, two runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh.

The momentum carried over into the second game, which was tied at three after three innings.

With one out, a runner on second base and the Devils nursing a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, Maplesville shortstop Morgan Little made what might have been the play of the game by making a running catch behind third base then turning and throwing to second ahead of the runner for an inning ending double play.

Cheyenne Sheffield’s two-out, two-run double in the top of the seventh iced the game for winning pitcher Courtney Killingsworth, who was also the winner in Game 1.

On the other field, Verbena’s Haley Kelley took a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first inning and came around to score, but Isabella pitcher Raelynn Liveoak would allow three hits and no runs the rest of the way.

The Mustangs already had a 7-0 lead when Kelley scored.

Play begins at noon Tuesday.
