Those waiting until the final day to file their federal and state taxes filled the lobby of the Clanton Post Office Wednesday.

Postmaster Ronnie Carmichael said his office experienced a “constant stream” of people sending in their tax returns.

“It’s probably a lot more than we have seen in years past,” Carmichael said. “I would have to say it’s about 10 to 20 percent more than we normally see.”

He added that throughout the day, his office had staffed all three counters in the post office to ensure they could handle as many customers as possible.

“I am sure we will see a few come in the next couple of days sending in their returns,” Carmichael said. “There are those who may have filed an extension today and then will come back in over the next few days to send in any money.”

In a release last week, the Internal Revenue Service said that Alabama residents would file more than 2.1 million tax returns this year. Of those, approximately 420,000 would be filed in the final week, while another 116,000 would file for an extension.
