A cast of about 125 people will stage the Easter Sunrise Service at Providence No. 2 Baptist Church Sunday morning.

For the past 28 years, people across Central Alabama have made the trip to Chilton County to watch the Easter story unfold in the quiet of the morning.

This year, Pastor Glen Bonds hopes the weather will provide a comfortable setting for the production.

“It was really, really cold last year on Sunday morning,” Bonds said.

While there are typically new scenes added each year, this year’s drama will be almost identical to last year’s, and will be the last Easter Sunrise Service held in the current location.

Starting next year, the service will take place in a terraced field across the road. The field is being intentionally landscaped for the benefit of audiences.

“We have begun to prepare it,” Bonds said. “It’s more of an amphitheater type setting. It will probably afford three times the people, and it will not be restricted by the cemetery.”

Because the church’s cemetery has grown over the years, several graves are located in the field where the drama is shown. The new site will allow this expansion to continue as needed.

Bonds also hinted at the possibility of other activities, such as an outdoor revival or a Christian music event.

Sunday’s service begins at 6 a.m. on the church grounds located at 6197 County Road 97 (off County Road 28) east of Clanton. People are asked to dress warmly and bring a lawn chair.

The dress rehearsal, which was postponed due to rain, will be Saturday at 2 p.m.

“The Easter Sunrise Service is an opportunity for people to renew their faith in Christ and receive Christ as their Savior,” Bonds said.
