Thorsby’s Town Council contributed $1,000 through Thorsby School’s Safeguarding Kids is Priority program to help the Child Protect Children’s Advocacy Center of Montgomery bring a satellite center to Clanton.

According to Angie Barnett, S.K.I.P. instructor and coordinator, the center will help children who are victims of sexual abuse in the county. In a letter to the council, she said the center will be available to help children in Thorsby as well as all of Chilton County.

In other business, the council approved a motion to provide a police car to lead a motorcycle ride April 18 that will raise funds for the county’s Relay For Life program. Council member Neil Benson said the ride will begin in Thorsby and travel a 72-mile route that will include parts of Calera. He said a large number of riders are expected to participate in the fundraiser.

The council also approved a motion to send three members of Thorsby’s Police Department to a class on domestic violence April 3 in Clanton. Council member Jean Nelson said three new businesses are scheduled to hold open house ceremonies from noon until 2 p.m. on April 4. The businesses are Daisies Florist and Gift Shop, The Cake Factory and Hair Design on Main.

Mayor Dearl Hilyer and Councilmember Tara Jewell were not present.

Both were attending a League of Municipalities meeting in Washington, D.C.
