Chilton County’s golf team on Thursday at the Clanton Country Club shot its best round of the season—and the best in David Moore’s three years as coach.

The 146 score was made up of the four best individual scores on nine holes.

Visiting Benjamin Russell (3-2) recorded a 185, and Jemison (2-2) shot a 186.

“I have not seen a round like this,” Moore said. “Basically, the practice is paying off. This is more of what we’re capable of.”

CCHS’s top scorers were Forrest Knight (34), Blake Jenkins (37), Matt Moore (37) and Chase Parrish (38), and Ivan Truss (42) and Pat Norman (44) also had solid rounds.

Jemison’s No. 1 player, Andy Mims, shot a 40, and coach Kelly Smitherman said he has seen significant improvement from Mims and the rest of his young squad from the beginning of the year.

“We’ve come a long way,” Smitherman said.

Smitherman said he thinks all four players have a shot at qualifying for sectionals when it once appeared Mims would be the only one.

If so, it would be the first time Jemison had an entire team qualify since 2004, Smitherman said.

A player must have an 18 handicap and play in seven matches to qualify for sectionals.
