A log truck struck a power pole at the intersection of Seventh Street and Fourth Avenue in Clanton late Tuesday afternoon, causing more than 1,600 power outages.

The truck, which had already unloaded, left the scene. The truck was apparently headed east on Fourth Avenue (Alabama 22) and turned south on Seventh Street (U.S. 31).

Clanton Police stopped a truck headed toward the Coosa County line on Alabama 22 East, but it turned out to be the wrong truck. Police were still looking for the vehicle as of press time.

“We’re going to investigate it as an accident,” Police Chief Brian Stilwell said. “We’ve got witnesses.”

Traffic was rerouted from the intersection and surrounding streets, and Seventh Street was blocked from Fifth Avenue down to Third Avenue while crews worked to replace the pole.

The wooden pole was splintered near the bottom and rested at an awkward angle while a concrete pole sustained some damage.

A reported 1,639 customers were without power yesterday evening, Alabama Power spokeswoman Jan Ellis said. This included mainly the entire west side of Clanton, from the intersection all the way to County Road 37.

The company’s goal was to have all power restored by midnight. Ellis explained that because of the area where the damage occurred, power could not be rerouted to any customers until the damage was repaired.

A Clanton crew and two Selma crews were assigned to the incident, and the pole was reportedly delivered from Selma.
