Devils dash past Eagles

Maplesville’s softball team yesterday defeated Calera, 8-2, to improve its record to 4-1 though all but one game has been against teams from higher classifications.

Courtney Killingsworth went 4-for-4 at the plate and baffled the visiting Eagles (1-2) from the circle. Killingsworth was the winning pitcher, allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits and three walks in seven innings while striking out nine.

With the bases loaded, two outs, an 0-2 count and the game tied at 1 in the bottom of the first inning, a blooper off the bat of Maplesville’s Natalie Arnold found the grass in shallow right field and cleared the bases to give the hosts a 4-1 lead that would not be threatened.

The Red Devils added one run in the fourth, two in the fifth on Kortisha Morrow’s inside-the-park home run, and one more in the sixth. Calera scored an unearned run in the seventh.

The visitors left 11 runners on base.

Devils Caitlyn Freeman (3/4, R), Morgan Little (2/4, 2 R) and Cheyenne Sheffield (2/4, R, RBI) also had multi-hit games.

Maplesville hosts Thorsby at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
