It was a cold night, but Maplesville’s bats were on fire as the Red Devils defeated Billingsley, 11-1, in six innings last night to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Maplesville’s softball team defeated Jemison, 6-4, in its season opener on Feb. 26, but the second win was more one-sided.

The Devils recorded as many extra-base hits, five, as Billingsley had total hits. The visitors pounded out 16 hits in all.

Cheyenne Sheffield did her part in making sure the offensive production was enough. Sheffield earned the win by allowing one earned run on five hits and one walk in six innings while striking out seven.

The scoring started in the Maplesville second inning when a Bridget Nichols triple scored Sheffield.

Natalie Arnold’s fielder’s choice the next inning brought home Kourtney Killingsworth for a 2-0 lead, but the big inning was the fifth.

With one out, five consecutive Maplesville batters reached base safely, and the last three of that run did the damage: run-scoring singles by Nichols and Bayne Edwards and a two-run single by Kortisha Morrow.

The Bears (1-3) got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning when Kim Lawrence laced a triple to the fence in right-center field, allowing Emily Thomas to score.

But Maplesville struck for three more runs in the top of the sixth and retired Billingsley in order in the bottom of the inning for an early win.
