A man is in jail after he allegedly broke into a Clanton convenience store last week and then attempted to escape police officers by jumping in a creek.

Tyrone Taylor, 22, of Clanton is facing a felony charge of third degree burglary along with misdemeanors including resisting arrest and criminal mischief. Clanton Police Investigator Keith Maddox said additional charges could be added.

As of yesterday, Taylor is in the Chilton County Jail awaiting a bond hearing.

At 12:30 a.m. on Feb. 19, police officers responded to a burglary alarm at Lucky Food Mart off Seventh Street North. The front window of the business had been broken out.

Though no one was inside the building when police arrived, officers noticed the suspect in woods behind the business.

The officers tried to question the suspect, but he ran and tried to elude officers by jumping in Goose Pond Creek. After the suspect refused to obey the officers’ order to come out of the creek, Clanton Police Officer David Clackley and Sheriff’s deputy Chris Wilson went into the creek and arrested the suspect.

“He dove in the creek on a pretty cold night,” Maddox said. “The officers said the water was very cold.”

The suspect was unarmed when he was arrested. Maddox couldn’t comment specifically on what all had been stolen from the business because officials are still investigating the incident.

“The whole night shift surrounded the suspect, and they did a great job arresting the suspect not long after the incident occurred,” Maddox said.

Taylor was out on bond for another burglary at the time of the incident.
