Posters were judged at 9 a.m. yesterday for an Arbor Day poster contest sponsored by the Clanton Beautification and Tree Board.

The competition was part of a statewide contest with the theme, “Trees are Terrific…In Cities and Towns.”

Fifth graders at Clanton Intermediate School created the posters, which were judged by city leaders Dan Nolen, Ann Baker and Sammy Wyatt. The third-place winner will receive $15, the second-place winner will receive $25 and the first-place winner will receive $50 and have his or her poster taken to Anniston to be entered in the state contest.

The state winner will receive cash and prizes provided by program sponsors, and his or her poster will then be entered in the national competition.

All posters entered in the local contest will be exhibited at City Hall on Feb. 24, the day of the Arbor Day Tree Give-A-Way.

Also, a tree will be planted at 1 p.m. on Feb. 19 at CIS in honor of the local first-place winner.

The state competition is sponsored by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Alabama Urban Forestry Association, Alabama Forestry Association, Legacy Inc., National Arbor Day Foundation, Toyota, Alabama Power Company and Gov. Bob Riley’s office.
