Post office putting mail in boxes later in morning

A truck breakdown in Birmingham delayed first class mail delivery to Clanton several hours on Wednesday.

Clanton Postmaster Ronnie Carmichael said the mail truck did not arrive until midmorning. Under normal delivery schedules first class mail is placed in post office boxes in Clanton between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.

Carmichael said changes in equipment at the district office in Birmingham have slowed the mail flowing through the center. “They have installed new mail handlers and they haven’t worked all the bugs out of the system at this point,” he said, adding, “The new equipment will make the flow of mail better.”

Normally first class mail is delivered to Clanton’s Post Office around 6 a.m. “In the last couple of months two to four days a week the truck has been getting here late,” Carmichael said.

Even with late delivery from Birmingham Carmichael said his crew works hard to have the mail in post office boxes by 9:30 a.m., the time posted inside the post office for mail to be placed in post office boxes daily.
