Jemison High School’s veterinary class is making weekly visits to the Chilton County Humane Society to spread a little love and attention to the animals at the shelter.

The students walked the dogs, let the cats out of their cages to pet them, and helped feed the animals. Several students have even volunteered to provide foster care for the animals.

“It’s a really good cause, and the animals all need love,” said junior Mary Beth Partridge, who aspires to become either a marine biologist or a veterinarian.

“It was my students’ idea,” class instructor Julie Davis said. “They wanted hands-on opportunities, and I knew the Humane Society would need help. We’re learning about caring for small animals and safety, so this just tied right in to our curriculum. There are some really cute, really sweet animals here — even the adult dogs.”

As a “thank you” for their efforts and as a learning tool, each of the students received a DVD on basic pet training and care.

Humane Society Director Paula Jo Mattingly said she was grateful for the assistance the students were willing to provide. But perhaps the animals themselves were most grateful of all.

“It’s really good that we have help from the school to come and just interact with our dogs to give them that one-on-one attention they need because they’re scared when they come in,” Mattingly said.

The class is also learning about large veterinary care. They look after two horses; one was donated by former Chilton County Cattleman James Shropshire and the other belongs to the school’s custodian, Jerry Sims.
