The Chilton County YMCA gymnastics team was a force to be reckoned with at the Sand Dollar Meet held Jan. 23-25 at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex.

Eleven members of the team competed among more than 2,000 kids on the national level, which were grouped into smaller teams based on their age and skill level.

“Every single person we took placed, which means they all placed in the top half of their age division,” coach Jamie Wallace said.

Alyssa McGee placed first all-around in Level 4 with a 36.975, beating out all the other kids who competed at that level.

McGee placed first on vault with a 9.35; first on bars with a 9.4; third on beam with a 9.0; and second on floor with a 9.225.

The Level 4 team placed ninth in the team competition with a score of 109.125.

Two other students placed first in events, including Level 5 competitor Lauren Cockrell, placing first on bars with a 9.275; and Level 7 competitor Amanda Gray, placing first on beam with an 8.875.

“It was fun placing first on the beam, even though I didn’t do my best routine,” Gray said. “It’s fun to watch the girls who are more advanced than we are.”

For nine out of the 11 students, it was their first time to compete on the national level. These included all Level 4 and Level 5 team members.

“We were proud of them,” Wallace said.

Katelyn Giles: 14th on vault, 10th on bars, ninth on beam, seventh on floor, ninth all around.

Anna Horn: third on vault, second on bars, fourth on beam, fourth on floor, third all around.
