Clanton’s City Council adopted rules and regulations for its fire department at last night’s meeting.

Fire Chief David Driver gave copies of the proposed rules and regulations to the council at an earlier meeting, giving the council an opportunity to study the document. “Considering the changes noted in the documents presented by Chief Driver tonight,” Council member Bobby Cook said, “I move for their adoption.” The council voted unanimously in favor of the proposal.

In other business, the council approved a new contract for the Chilton County YMCA to operate the swimming pool at City Park. “For the most part,” Council member Mary Mell Smith said, “it (the contract) works out well for the Y and for the city.”

The council approved a motion to solicit bids on four new police cars. Mayor Billy Joe Driver said the state bid on police cars at the present is approximately $23,000 each and the city will accept bids to determine how it will purchase the new vehicles.

The council approved the purchase of three new cameras for police cars and for the repair of several others. The cost of the new units and the repair of the old units are expected to be $14,000-$15,000.

The council will also advertise for applications for two new police officers. A motion to hire Nathanial Moatts as the city’s license inspector was approved. Mayor Driver said the city received 79 applications from people seeking the position.

The council approved changes in the Clanton Zoning Ordinance that were recommended by the city’s Zoning Board. It approved the third phase of Creek Wood Subdivision being developed by Mac Mims off Wilson Road.

The council approved motions for Fire Chief Driver and fireman Mark Thornton to attend a fire chief’s meeting in February and for Police Chief Brian Stilwell to attend a Police Chiefs meeting today through Jan. 16 in Huntsville.

The council also discussed a proposed Urban Forestry Management Plan grant and suggested policies for the operation of the city’s civic center to be constructed on the Jefferson State Community College campus here. No action was taken on either matter.
