The First United Methodist Church is preparing its Activity Center for the annual Relay for Life Kickoff event that is set to take place on Monday, Jan. 12.

At 6 p.m., the church will be hosting the kickoff with an array of the color purple since purple is the signature for Chilton County’s Relay for Life.

“We are looking forward to building on last year’s event and are excited about having new teams and participants join us,” said Bro. Robert Griffin, the event chair. “Last year’s event was amazing. This kickoff is just the beginning of great things to come.”

Every year, the kickoff set the mood the actual Relay for Life event, which is set to be held at the Clanton Youth League Football field April 24.

The 2008 Relay For Life in Chilton County was a successful event, raising more than $182,000 for the American Cancer Society.

This year, the event board is working hard to set new goals as they ask community members to come out and show their support.

“We are excited to be holding another Relay for Life event here in Clanton, and we just hope we have as good of a year as last year, if not better,” Griffin said.
