Church services have changed over the past couple of decades to incorporate a more contemporary style of worship. Catchy choruses backed by pounding drums and clanging cymbals have replaced the traditional organ and piano in many worship settings, and the style of preaching has evolved along with the music.

But one local church is bringing back the old days with a new service emphasizing the more traditional aspects of worship. Lomax Assembly of God will begin what they call “Lomax Old School” tomorrow morning at 8.

The service will be held in addition to the church’s 10:30 a.m. contemporary service, which is preceded by Sunday School.

“We just want to be able to reach out to everyone,” said Donna Calhoun, wife of pastor Jeff Calhoun. “Our church is a contemporary style church. We’re younger based but we want to open it up to everyone in the community.”

A flyer describes the service as having “great Southern gospel style hymns and worship” and “powerful Pentecostal preaching” by Pastor Jeff Calhoun, who will deliver sermons in both services each week.

The church, whose members average 30-35 in age, hopes to attract both the old and young to its new service.

“We hope this would reach all ages,” Calhoun said.
