Disciple Now returning to county

THORSBY — Students looking for something to do will have a reason to get excited the weekend of Jan. 2-4.

Thorsby First Baptist Church will host Disciple Now for students from grade seven through college age. The event consists of energetic music, fun games, food and group sessions.

Well-known guests include local band Thalon, worship leaders The Generation, and speaker Andy Heis.

“We’re opening it up to anyone that wants to come or as many as we can fit into the fellowship hall,” Philip Wigley, minister to students at Thorsby First Baptist, said. “It’s really upbeat. There is a lot of high energy.”

The Generation are from Gardendale First Baptist and are heard regularly along with Heis on Christian radio station WDJC. They create a contemporary worship setting geared toward college students.

Most local students are probably already familiar with Thalon, the rock trio of Chilton County natives Jeremy Springer, Wesley Springer and Austin Childress. They have released their first full-length album in recent months.

Disciple Now also consists of free meals and unique contests such as sumo wrestling and “bungee” bull riding featuring an inflatable bull. There will also be a bonfire Saturday night at 8.

Everything kicks off Friday, Jan. 2 at 5 p.m. with a pizza fellowship, followed by the first group session and worship.

While students have typically traveled to host homes each night during Disciple Now, that has been eliminated this year in an attempt to make the event more accessible.

“We don’t want anybody not to come because of that,” Wigley explained.
