At least one person involved in Monday’s head on collision in Maplesville sustained severe injury.

The driver of the GMC van, Alejandro Villeda 30 of Georgia, was treated at UAB hospital for multiple broken bones in his leg and hip. Five other members of his family, Esperanza Santiago, 23; Alfansa Santiago, 20; Raquel Villeda, 5; Alexis Villeda, 3; and Jonathan Villeda 2 were also involved in the wreck but were not severely injured. Father, Alejandro and son Alexis were flown to the hospital.

The driver of the Toyota truck, Jared Fuller 25 of Plantersville, was also flown to UAB hospital. He sustained only minor injuries from the wreck.

“According to statements from the truck driver, he had suffered a fall earlier in the day and may or may not have been having trouble staying conscious. It was after a blackout that he drifted into the other lane and struck the van head on,” Maplesville Officer Patrick Quinley said.
