That pain may not be just in your head

Many people keep trying to walk off that small tingle of pain in their knee or shoulder thinking it is just due to old age.

The truth is that millions of Americans are actually suffering from some form of arthritis. During recent months, research has shown that Osteoarthritis has become the most common type of arthritis.

Due to the heightened amount of people with the condition, the Arthritis Foundation has added Osteoarthritis to their information list on their Web site, www.americanarthritis.org to better answer people’s questions.

“There are a lot of things people don’t know or understand about arthritis, and we are here to do what we can to fix that,” Arthritis Foundation representative Katherine Maybank said.

The Web site now has information about things patients can do themselves for their arthritis, ways to ease the pain at home and ways to deal with the limitations arthritis places on you.

Osteoarthritis is a chronic condition characterized by the breakdown of a joint’s cartilage. When the cartilage breaks down, it causes the bones to rub against each other, which in turn can cause stiffness, pain and even loss of movement in a joint.

There are things people can do to keep their joints moving freely, and talking to your doctor about any pain in the joints is the first step.

“We can help tell people the signs of all the types of arthritis, but only a doctor can determine whether a person has arthritis,” Maybank said.
