MONTGOMERY – Gov. Bob Riley had outpatient surgery Wednesday in Birmingham for basal cell carcinoma on his nose, and his spokesman said he came through the surgery fine.

Press secretary Todd Stacy said the spot on Riley’s nose was benign. Riley noticed the spot last month and contacted his doctor.

The press secretary said the governor called the office after the surgery and described the procedure as “a piece of cake.”

Stacy said Riley plans to work from his Montgomery home for the rest of the week and return to the Capitol on Monday.

The Skin Cancer Foundation describes basal cell carcinoma as the most common type of cancer, with about 1 million cases diagnosed annually in the U.S. It usually occurs on areas of the body with lots of sun exposure and is easy to treat when discovered early.
