The American Civil Liberties Union has requested that the Chilton County Schools System turn over any documents that they may have regarding sex-segregated classes.

The request, which was sent Monday, stated the reason why it was included was because the school system had sex-segregated classes at Maplesville School. However, School Superintendent Keith Moore said yesterday they currently do not have any classes separated by gender at the school.

“I’m not sure what they want,” Moore said. “We haven’t had any sex-segregated classes at Maplesville since Mrs. [Maggie] Hicks has been principal at Maplesville.”

Alabama ACLU attorney Allison Neal said they are questioning the legality of such classes across the country. So, they are trying to gather as much information to see whether the classes are voluntary and if the curriculum for such classes are the same. Otherwise, the ACLU believes that it could be a violation of Title IX.

In addition to Chilton County, the ACLU also requested records from Baldwin County, Dothan City, Fayette County, Huntsville City, Lawrence County, St. Clair County and Wilcox County school districts.

“We were looking for any documents regarding the classes at Maplesville High School,” Neal said. “The request would also apply to any other sex-segregated classes at other schools.”
