Maplesville on Friday lost its season opener, but the Red Devils can’t blame it on rusty shooting.

Chilton County High picked up its first win, 49-42, even though its hosts drained nine 3-pointers in the second half to chip away at a 16-point halftime deficit.

But Rachel Johnston scored 18 points for the Tigers (1-4), and Vernice Trimble added 16 points to keep the Devils at bay.

Maplesville’s Kiana Andrews scored all of her 15 points via the long distance shot. She was four of five from behind the line in the second half.

Bridget Nichols scored all but two of her 17 points on 3-pointers, including three in the second half. Tanisha Bailey scored six of her eight points on two threes in the third quarter.

Maplesville cut the lead to seven with a little more than two minutes remaining in the game, but Tylita Harrell drove to the basket and dished to Johnston for two to essentially put the game away.
