AUBURN – Auburn’s list of potential coaching targets to replace Tommy Tuberville reportedly is getting thinned out.
The Birmingham News said Friday that Auburn is not pursuing Texas Tech’s Mike Leach, who had been mentioned previously as a possible candidate, and that Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp isn’t interested in the job.
A person with knowledge of the talks told The Associated Press that Mississippi’s Houston Nutt reached a contract extension Friday, after being included in reports on possible successors to Tuberville. Nutt led Ole Miss to an 8-4 record in his first year with the Rebels after switching from Arkansas, another SEC West school.
The News said Florida State offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher is a potential Auburn target. Muschamp and Fisher are both ex-Auburn assistants who have been anointed as successors to their current head coaches.
Other names mentioned include Louisiana Tech coach Derek Dooley.
Tuberville stepped down Wednesday after 10 seasons.
