Other than the third quarter, Chilton County High dominated Thursday night’s game against Briarwood Christian.

But that period – in which the visiting Lions (6-3) outscored the Tigers (2-1) 22-8 – was enough to make CCHS fans sweat the result until late in the 64-58 win.

Chilton County built 31-19 lead by halftime thanks to Taylor Hughes’ 12 points off the bench and a full-court press defense that hurried Briarwood into turnovers and bad shots.

But the visitors settled into their offense after intermission and had a lead going into the fourth quarter after Carter Tanner, who would lead all scorers with 22 points, scored the last seven points of the third.

The Lions stretched the lead to six points, but Chilton’s Nelson Williams drained a pull-up jump shot going right to tie the game at 47 and Kenyon Floyd cleaned up a Tra Felder miss on a fastbreak to take back the lead with 4 minutes left.

Down as much as eight points, Briarwood tried to get back in the game by fouling, but Floyd and Williams were good on seven of eight foul shots down the stretch to seal the win.

Williams scored 11 points in the fourth quarter alone, and Floyd led the Tigers with 14 points.
