MARION (AP) – A Black Belt county in Alabama has created a holiday in honor of President-elect Barack Obama.

The second Monday in November will be “The Barack Obama Day” in Perry County. On that day, county offices will close and workers will get a paid holiday.

County commissioner Albert Turner Jr., who sponsored the measure, said he has mailed copies of the resolution to Obama and his transition team.

The majority of the 12,000 residents who live in Perry County, which is in central Alabama, are black. Almost 73 percent of the county’s presidential votes went to Obama.
