The Chilton County United Way has raised $170,000 toward its annual fundraising campaign but still needs $30,000 to reach its goal.

The organization, which assists 26 agencies in Chilton County that in turn help both adults and children in need, has set a goal of $200,000 and has just over a month to meet that amount.

“Donations have slowed up a little,” United Way Board chairman Curtis Smith said. “We think possibly the economic times are having an effect on it.”

Some agencies, such as the Chilton County Emergency Assistance Center, are seeing an outpouring of requests for food due to the downturn in the economy. This is one of the main agencies helped by United Way.

Many people are being laid off from their jobs, and the potential of disaster is an ongoing concern for the organization.

“Please give to the United Way because this is really the main agency that helps people in Chilton County,” Smith urges. “We’re approaching our last month, and we encourage people to give. If we don’t reach our goal, we will have to cut all these agencies, and we certainly don’t want to do that.”

Children are assisted by the United Way via groups such as the Chilton County Department of Human Resources, the Chilton County Fraternal Order of Police’s Operation: Santa Claus, and Maplesville’s Toys for Kids.

“These are really worthwhile agencies because they’re helping kids,” Smith said. “We thank those who have helped already.”

Upcoming fundraisers include Dollar Day on Dec. 4. This is an effort targeting local schools, but anyone can participate just by giving a donation of at least $1. Parents are asked to help their students participate.

The 8th Annual Chilton County United Way Gospel Singing in memory of Billy Lawrence will be held Jan. 2 at the Chilton County High School auditorium. Featured groups will be The Hoppers, Ivan Parker, and Holy Destiny.
