Jemison Police Chief Brian Stilwell was unanimously appointed by the Clanton City Council as the city’s new head law enforcement officer.

At least 16 people turned in résumés to apply for the police chief vacancy. The council then narrowed that list down to three candidates: Stilwell, Shane Mayfield and Keith Maddox.

All three were interviewed by the council during an executive session Monday night. After emerging from the session, the council chose the new police chief.

Clanton Mayor Billy Joe Driver said it was difficult to pick out a new police chief because all the candidates had good résumés.

“I think we had a very good group of candidates. I think any one of them could have done a good job,” Driver said. “The council members had differing opinions on what they wanted. We worked it out, and everyone came to a unanimous decision.”

Stilwell is replacing former chief James Henderson, who retired at the end of last month. Stilwell has worked previously with Chilton County Sheriff’s Department and the Clanton Police Department before coming police chief in Jemison.

Stilwell plans to begin working in Clanton on Dec. 8. Driver said he hoped the unity showed during this process continues going forward.

“I hope that we will all come together and support the new police chief,” Driver said.
