Jemison’s City Council declared a vacancy for the District 2 council seat Monday night.

The seat is vacant as a result of former council member Danny Robinson’s recent resignation. The council can legally fill the seat at its next regular meeting but must do so within 60 days.

If the seat is not filled within 60 days, the council may submit names to Gov. Bob Riley, who would appoint a new council member. If that is not done within 30 days, the probate judge could call for an election.

In other business, the council voted to change its regular meeting time on Monday nights from 7 p.m. to 6 p.m.

“I would like to see our council meet a little earlier — an hour earlier,” Mayor Eddie Reed said.

The new time will go into effect at the council’s next regular meeting Dec. 1.

A low bid of $15,955 was awarded to Shoal Creek Building Services for a new City Hall roof. The bid is for labor only, and must meet the city’s specifications.

A committee made up of Council member George Brasher, Superintendent Shelby Posey and Building Inspector Shannon Welch will see that the bid meets specifications and that the company meets the city’s standards.

A pitched metal roof will replace the current flat roof, which has leaked on several occasions, Reed said.

Reed said a fence has been erected around the city compound, and that wooden stairs at City Park will be replaced by steel stairs as mandated by the League of Municipalities Insurance/Loss Control Unit.

Voted to obtain prices for a fire safety exit and exterior lighting for the City Annex

Requested Alabama Power to repair all streetlights in the city that are out

Approved a resolution to participate in “2010: Year of Alabama Small Towns and Downtowns,” a program sponsored by the Office of the Governor, Alabama League of Municipalities, Alabama State Chambers of Commerce, and the Alabama Tourism Department.
