Jemison and Thorsby’s Cub Scout Pack 96 joined their fellow scouts around the nation yesterday by observing the annual Scouting for Food drive.

The scouts assembled outside Mizzell’s Super Saver and collected 105 cans of food, several boxes of dry goods and approximately 80 total pounds of donations from the public. Monetary donations were accepted as well, and with the amount collected the scouts went inside and purchased more goods.

All of the items will help replenish the food bank at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, the pack’s charter organization, for distribution to the area’s needy.

“This is the second year we have done this, and the second year Pack 96 has been in existence,” Tanya Edwards, event chairperson, said. “It helps teach them the value of money and helping others. It is also a part of what they have to learn to earn their badges.”

The pack serves the Jemison and Thorsby areas, and in its short existence several members have already graduated to become Boy Scouts. This year, three more will graduate, Edwards said.

Pack 96 is part of the Tukabatchee Area Council, Frontier District. They meet every Monday night at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church from 7-8 p.m.

“We would like to thank the community for their help in this drive,” Edwards said.
