A longtime civil rights attorney and Democratic Party leader says he believes Alabama’s Macon County led the nation in the percentage of votes cast for President-elect Barack Obama.

Obama received 86.9 percent of the votes in Macon to 12.8 percent for Republican John McCain on Nov. 4.

Tuskegee attorney Fred Gray says he believes that was the best showing for Obama in any county in the country.

The 2000 Census showed Macon County was about 85 percent black and had one of the highest percentage of minorities in the country. The county traditionally votes for Democratic candidates by a large margin.

Democrat John Kerry won in Macon County in 2004 with 82.9 percent of the votes.
