A group of Jemison High School students will honor local veterans Wednesday in a special assembly scheduled for 1 p.m. in the school’s auditorium.

The school sent out notices via students inviting any family members who are veterans to attend the ceremony. The school wishes to recognize those who have served or are currently serving, whether in war or during peacetime.

About 20 veterans have committed to attend the program, event sponsor Kelly Smitherman said.

“Our kids put a lot of effort into it, and a lot of work,” Smitherman said. “We started getting this together back in March.”

The school’s Blue Regiment band will play the fight song of each branch of service as the veterans march into the auditorium in groups representing their respective branches.

The veterans will be escorted out of the building in much the same way, before anyone else is allowed to leave.

Sen. Hank Erwin will be the keynote speaker for the event. In addition, students will make historical speeches.

“Our goal was to show students what people before them have done to give them what they have now,” Smitherman said.

The program is estimated to last about one hour.
