Jemison to declare vacancy

Jemison’s City Council is expected to declare a vacancy in the District 2 council seat Monday night during a regular meeting.

The seat was vacated Monday night, Nov. 3 when newly re-elected Council member Danny Robinson announced his resignation before a crowded council room in Jemison City Hall. Robinson made the announcement on the night when he would have taken the oath of office.

After declaring a vacancy, the council would then have the authority to appoint a replacement from District 2 at its first meeting in December. This meeting would take place Monday, Dec. 1.

The council would have a period of 60 days to appoint a replacement. If it failed to do so, however, Gov. Bob Riley would have the authority to appoint someone within 30 days. The governor’s appointment would be based on a list of potential appointees submitted by the council.

If the governor failed to make an appointment within the 30-day limit, the Chilton County probate judge would have the option of calling for a special election to fill the vacant seat.

Robinson’s term is for the next four years. Whomever is appointed will serve for the remainder of the term.
