Residents in Arab and Cleburne County have voted to legalize liquor sales while voters in Randolph, Blount and Geneva counties have rejected similar proposals.

Residents voted on the wet-dry proposals Tuesday.

Voters in Arab approved the referendum 2,100 votes, or 54 percent, to 1,767 votes, or 46 percent, according to unofficial results. It failed two years ago by only 18 votes.

Cleburne voted to go totally wet with 3,278 yes votes to 2,386 opposing the measure. The county has allowed the sale of certain types of alcohol since 1971.

The successful Cleburne County effort was led by cousins Josh and Dylan Laminack, muscadine growers there who wanted to build a winery but couldn’t do it under the current law.

Randolph rejected alcohol sales 5,097 votes to 4,756, while Blount rejected the proposal 13,736 votes to 10,010. Geneva narrowly rejected alcohol sales 5,683 votes to 5,592.

Randolph, Blount and Geneva counties remain among 26 Alabama counties that do not allow the sale of alcohol.
