Clanton awarded a $130,224 bid last night to Chilton Contractors to build a road on city property near the Peach Water Tower off Lay Dam Road.

The three bids on the project ranged from the high bid of $172,344 to the low bid that was awarded.

In other business, the council accepted the resignation of Jason Parker, who served as the city’s license inspector. It also approved a motion to send six city park employees to a turf-training class.

Council member Elizabeth Hill expressed her appreciation to the council “for your confidence in me and allowing me to serve the people of Clanton the past seven months.” Mrs. Hill was appointed to the council by the other council members to complete the term of her late husband, Elem.

Council member Ann Baker told the council she had served on the city council half of her adult life. “I loved what I did serving the people of Clanton,” she said, “and I appreciate the opportunity given to me by God and the people to serve.”

Baker, Hill and councilmember Ronnie Porter were attending the last council meeting in their terms. Hill did not seek reelection. Baker was defeated by incumbent Mayor Billy Joe Driver for mayor, and Ronnie Porter was defeated by Jeff Price for the Ward One council seat.

Mayor driver expressed his appreciation to all three council members who will not return for the next council term.

The new council will be installed in a ceremony at City Hall at 11 a.m. Monday.
