You can’t give too much

One of Chilton County’s biggest blood drives is named after one of its most generous donors.

Donny Martin Day is Sunday at West End Baptist Church from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the church fellowship hall.

Martin, a longtime donor, has given 19 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. It is a number that has taken him 51 years to reach.

“I want everyone to come out and give so we will have a successful blood drive,” Martin said.

Red Cross Director Betty Byrd said it is fitting that Martin will give the first pint of blood Sunday.

“We’re proud to have Donny’s assistance with the American Red Cross,” she said. “He is a great asset to Chilton County and our organization. Not only has he donated 19 gallons of blood, but he has also assisted us with fires, storm recovery, and armed forces emergency services. He has touched many lives by meeting medical and life-saving needs.”

The American Red Cross reminds the public there is an urgent need for type O blood donors. Anyone who is eligible to donate is asked to bring photo ID and give.

All donors of blood or platelets will receive a T-shirt and be entered into a drawing for a $1,000 gift card.

To schedule an appointment, sign up at the church or call 755-0625, or go online to www.givelife.org.
