Friday is the last day for Chilton County residents to register to vote in the Nov. 4 elections.

The Board of Registrars office is located on the bottom floor of the Chilton County Courthouse and will close at 4 p.m. Friday. No one may register to vote after that time.

“People need to register as soon as they can and not wait until the last minute,” Board of Registrars chairman Bill Popwell said.

Prospective voters may either register in the office or pick up a form and turn it in by the deadline. Forms may be downloaded from the Alabama Secretary of State’s Web site, www.sos.state.al.us. Just scroll to the bottom of the screen and click the link titled “Get a Voter Registration Form.”

Any mailed forms should be postmarked no later than Friday, Oct. 24. Any that are postmarked on a later date will not be accepted.

There are currently 24,706 active voters and 1,274 inactive voters in Chilton County, as of yesterday.

Popwell said he expects high turnout on Election Day, possibly as high as 70 to 75 percent. The main reason a high interest in the presidential election, though county commission races are expected to draw interest as well.

Other offices up for re-election include Chilton County Tax Assessor as well as state offices.

Popwell reminds all voters that they are required to present identification at the polling place. Identification presented should include name and address and preferably an up-to-date photo.
